ATTORNEY GENERAL ISSUES IMPENDING TAX ASSESSMENT WARNING TO CALIFORNIA ADVOCATES FOR NURSING HOME REFORM
Lockyer Letter Issued In Response to Public Interest Watch Inquiry

(Sacramento) - California Attorney General Bill Lockyer issued a "Warning of Impending Tax Assessment" to the directors, trustees and officers of California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform on Tuesday, noting the group's failure to timely file IRS Form 990 for the previous four years.

The Warning came in response to an inquiry from non-profit watchdog Public Interest Watch which is investigating possible violations of tax law by California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANRH), a San Francisco-based non-profit accused of using charitable contributions for non-charitable purposes-including lawyer-referral services for trial attorneys and lobbying activities in the State Capitol.

The Attorney General has given CANHR thirty days to file the delinquent returns. If CANHR fails to comply, the Franchise Tax Board will be notified to disallow the group's tax exemption, assess taxes and impose the maximum penalties under the law.
