Greenpeace's Secret Warehouse Exposed,
Says Public Interest Watch
Facility Serves as Command and Control Center for Greenpeace's Controversial Activities
LOS ANGELES, May 19 /PRNewswire
Public Interest Watch (PIW) has
uncovered the exact location of the secret "action warehouse" Greenpeace
uses to coordinate its controversial actions. Hidden behind its doors
is a treasure trove of information about Greenpeace's operations and its
future plans.
According to Public Interest Watch, Greenpeace uses the warehouse,
located in suburban Washington, D.C., to store props and train
activists.
Greenpeace has attempted to raise money by offering tours of the
warehouse to its biggest donors, but has gone to great lengths to keep
its location secret.
Lewis Fein, Executive Director of Public Interest Watch, commented:
"The Justice Department's prosecution of Greenpeace already has
significantly impaired Greenpeace's ability to operate. The exposure of
this facility is another nail in the coffin for Greenpeace."
The Justice Department is using an obscure 19th century statute to
prosecute Greenpeace for a stunt it pulled in Miami in 2002 where
activists stormed a ship on its way into port.
In a recent fundraising solicitation, Greenpeace calls the
prosecution "unprecedented" and stresses, "If convicted, Greenpeace
would face massive fines and up to five years of probation, during which
our ability to engage in direct action protests would no doubt be
prohibited." The trial started Monday in Miami, FL.
What has made Greenpeace such a high-profile target for the Justice
Department is its ability to train and organize its activists and the
attention-grabbing, creative props it uses in its stunts. All of this
-- training, props, and organization -- can be traced back to this
"Action Warehouse." Since Attorney General Ashcroft brought suit
against Greenpeace, the warehouse appears to be dormant and Greenpeace
had little presence during major protests including those at the IMF
meetings in Washington, D.C., last month.
The address of the warehouse is 3133 Pennsy Drive, Hyattsville, MD
20785.
