IRS Cracks Down on Greenpeace
After an intensive audit, the Internal Revenue Service found nine deficiencies in the management and practices of Greenpeace USA and
warned that "Failure to ensure appropriateness of grant and gift funds could jeopardize the exempt status of {Greenpeace} fund."
In fact Greenpeace USA's two arms, it's 501 c3 Greenpeace Fund and it's 501 c 4 advocacy wing Greenpeace Inc., were told to
change their practices "due to the illegal nature" of their activities.
In 2003, Public Interest Watch complained to the IRS about Greenpeace's use of tax deductible contributions for "direct actions" and
other illegal activities. PIW also protested Greenpeace USA's steering of tax exempt money to Greenpeace International. The IRS is
forcing Greenpeace to change these practices, vindicating PIW's scrutiny of the organization.
